Myra Syal, a Goldfish & Cranial Osteopathy!
I came across this wonderful video about the benefits of cranial work on babies and families, and wanted to share it.
The Neurobiology of Attachment
The human brain is often cited as being the most complex structure in the known universe.
This soft, small organ, weighing less than 3 pounds in an adult, is responsible for a vast array of different physiological and psychological processes, many of which we are only just beginning to understand. At birth, the basic structures of a baby’s brain are already in place. However, many of these are in a state of immaturity and the synaptic connections between the different nerve cells within the brain are in a process of gradual development.
The Taboo of Birth Trauma
I recently came across this video of a normal hospital birth in Brazil. The video was obviously shot as part of the celebration to mark the arrival of a new baby into this family. The look of joy on the father’s face is clear to see. The production of the video also emphasises this celebratory aspect as it has soft background music and lots of images of hearts, storks and angels, indicating that the birth of a baby should be all about love, tenderness and the creation of those crucial early bonds.
What are the Main Causes of Disrupted Attachment in Children?
Although the causes of bonding and attachment problems are manifold, they fall into three broad categories.
The first category involves those children who have experienced some form of prenatal and/or birth trauma which directly affects their ability to develop a functional bond with their mother. Typical examples would include unwanted pregnancies, in utero drug and alcohol exposure as well as violence, illness and extreme or prolonged stress during pregnancy. Relevant influences occurring during the birth process include prematurity, early separation from mother and harsh or invasive handling of the baby by birth attendants.
Just How Safe Are Amalgam Fillings?
Check out this video for important information on Amalgam or Mercury Fillings.
Whilst many people have argued for decades against the wisdom of putting one of the world’s most potent neurotoxins so close to the human brain, especially in children, the dental profession has been slow to respond to these concerns.
How Important is the Way you Interact with your Baby?
Could this simple experiment indicate just how important mother-baby interactions actually are?
The Still Face Experiment, developed by Dr. Edward Tronick in the 1970′s, was devised as a way of studying the emotional and social development of a baby, and how they are affected when the relationship with their primary caregiver breaks down.
In the first part of the experiment, the parent sitting face to face with their baby interacts with him in a playful and reciprocal way. The parent is then instructed to either look away or to to have a blank emotionless expression whilst ignoring the baby’s needs.
What is the Single Best Thing we can do for our Health?
Check out this wonderful video by Dr. Mike Evans, the founder of the Health Design Lab at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto, and a staff physician at St. Michael’s Hospital.
Some of the revelations and statistics in this short video are truly amazing.
Understanding the Higgs-boson effect
Over the past 24 hours, there has been increasing anticipation that the physicists at CERN in Switzerland will finally have discovered proof of the so-called “God Particle” – the Higgs-boson particle.
A lot of what has been reported about this has gone over most people’s heads (including mine!). This post is my own attempt to make some sort of sense of why this little particle is so important and also whether it could have any relevance to us in our work.
